One Tile at a Time
By: Jodi Salerno
My name is Jodi Salerno, a Southern California native who has called Newport Beach home for nearly three decades. I am an entrepreneur who started my own business, Tudaloo, eight years ago. Living in Newport Beach and meeting so many fascinating individuals inspired me to want to know more about them and their many talents. In my upcoming articles, I'll interview people from various fields, such as sports, fashion, art, dining, music, and more.
Meet Mahjong Sara. Sara is Mad for Mahjong and her deep passion for the game, acquired over two decades, has blossomed into a thriving business. NO JOKE! If you want to learn the game of Mahj, and have fun doing it, Sara and her team will teach you everything you need to know.
Jodi: Could you tell us more about how you started your Mahjong business?
Sara: Mahj Club began 15 years ago to build a community (#onetileatatime). We teach Mahjong because games promote social interaction and #peopleneedpeople. Mahj Club values are based on creating group rituals, cultivating relationships, and inspiring play for all age groups.
Jodi: Why do you have such a deep love for mahjong? What drew you to the game initially?
Sara: I am energized by the bonds I have made through the world of Mahj and how it has impacted my life in so many positive ways. The history of Mahjong intrigued me initially because it has remained popular since it was developed in 19th-century China. The way it has spread throughout the world tells a story of its own. Did you know that more than 600 million people are playing Mahjong worldwide?
Jodi: Where do you see the future of mahjong heading?
Sara: Mahjong is the next pickleball! In the future, there will be a mahjong parlor in Newport Beach. Additionally, there will be more scientific studies published that show the brain health benefits.
Jodi: Could you share three valuable tips for aspiring mahjong players looking to improve their skills, strategy, and luck?
Sara: You can never have a Joker in a pair. Concentrate on tile efficiency. Knowing which tiles to discard will maximize your hand. Always think one step ahead. When it comes to luck, superstitious players will tell you never to sit with your back to the door. Washing your hands can change your luck, and never tap another player on the shoulder.
Jodi: Share something unique about yourself that most people may not know.
Sara: I like to say I am in the "Mahj Million Club" because I have played over 1 million Mahjong games to date.
Jodi: How can people get in touch with you to learn more about Mahjong?
Sara: IG @mahjonggsara or www.mahjclub.com
