Kenny Melton: Continuing to Inspire Greatness Through Scholarship

By: Amanda Huntsman

The legacy of Newport Beach’s Kenny Melton continues to thrive, not merely as a memory but as an inspiration for the community. Kenny's journey was one of adventure, resilience, and unwavering kindness, culminating in his battle with brain cancer. Despite facing unimaginable challenges, Kenny remained steadfast in his commitment to pay forward the kindness he received during his struggle. Today, his spirit lives on through the Kenny Melton Scholarship Foundation, a testament to his enduring impact on the lives of others.

Kenny's story began with a passion for exploration and a deep love for the outdoors. After graduating from college, he embarked on a remarkable journey, selling his possessions and traveling across the globe. From teaching English in Beijing to surfing the waves of Costa Rica, Kenny embraced every opportunity for adventure. His zest for life was infectious, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

However, at the age of 32, Kenny's life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), an aggressive form of brain cancer. Despite the grim prognosis, Kenny approached his diagnosis with characteristic courage and resilience. Supported by the love of his family and the community, he confronted his illness head-on, undergoing treatment and facing each day with grace and determination.

Throughout his battle with cancer, Kenny's home on 34th Street became a hub of support and compassion. Friends and loved ones rallied around him, providing comfort, companionship, and countless acts of kindness. Despite his challenges, Kenny remained grateful for the love and support that surrounded him.

As his illness progressed, his memory began to fade, but his spirit remained unbroken. His daily visits to the bench at 34th Street beach became a cherished ritual, a moment of solace and reflection amidst the turmoil of his illness. Today, that bench stands as a tribute to Kenny's enduring legacy, a reminder of the strength and resilience that defined his life.

On March 22nd, 2014, Kenny passed away, leaving behind a profound legacy of love and generosity. In the months leading up to his death, he took the time to record a video, sharing his reflections on life and expressing gratitude for the countless blessings he had received. His words continue to inspire and uplift those who knew him, serving as a reminder of the power of kindness and the importance of living each day to the fullest.

In honor of Kenny's memory, the Kenny Melton Scholarship Foundation was established, fulfilling one of his final wishes to pay forward the kindness he had received. The foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to supporting students at various high schools, empowering them to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Through scholarships and educational opportunities, the foundation seeks to honor Kenny's legacy and continue his mission of spreading kindness and generosity.

Kenny Melton may no longer walk among us, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. Through his foundation, his memory continues to inspire and uplift, reminding us of the power of kindness, resilience, and the enduring impact of a life well-lived. As we reflect on Kenny's legacy, let us be inspired to carry forward his legacy of love and compassion, making a difference in the lives of others and spreading kindness wherever we go.

“Our scholarships are unique in that they are not necessarily academic based. We believe in recognizing our youth who work hard to overcome various life and school challenges; students who have an innate ability to spread kindness, respect, honesty, and gratitude. We are in search of honoring these students who embody these qualities and who will continue to pay it forward in our local communities.”
