Hi Neighbors!
It’s officially June, and when I think of this month, I think of June gloom. When I think of June gloom, I think of London (but why?), and when I think of London, I think of this month’s book review, The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. It is a cozy mystery that reads like it’s made for TV. And if you know anything about the author, then you’ll know why! (Are you intrigued yet?)
This book centers around a sweet little retirement village where four residents, turned unlikely friends, gather every Thursday in the jigsaw puzzle room. There, they read old unsolved murders and crime cases, discuss the details of the case, and try to solve these unsolved mysteries. And you guessed it, they call themselves, The Thursday Murder Club.
Ready for the twist? The Thursday Murder Club is all fun and games until the developer that helped create their sweet little retirement village is found dead in his own home. Now, there’s a real-life murder to solve and they can’t wait to get started. But how do they insert themselves in this case that the police don’t want them snooping in? Of course, the only answer in their minds is to go completely rogue and get to the bottom of his murder. They can’t even wait to share with the police all they have uncovered about the case.
If you are someone who loves to sit with your bowl of popcorn and watch crime documentaries, listen to true crime podcasts, or read murder mysteries, then this laugh-out-loud whodunit will have you reading any chance you can!
The characters are quirky, fun, loveable, and they all bring something different to the table as they deal with their own pasts. What I loved about this book was that I truly didn’t know what was going to happen next with all the twists and turns. I loved the witty banter, dry humor (and slapstick humor), and I loved that it was fun! This is not at all the heavy read where subject matter is sometimes difficult to process, which is why I recommend this book to everyone.
So, during our next gloomy day (which we’ll have a LOT of in June!), make yourself a cuppa (tea), grab a cozy blanket, and enjoy getting lost in all the shenanigans that these four septuagenarians’ get into, and also have to cover up. The best part is that this book is only the first in a four-part series, so yes! You can pick up the next book and get yourself lost in another case. It’s also available in audiobook format for all those busy days where laundry might pile up, or if your day finds you on the road. The Thursday Murder Club will keep you guessing ‘round every corner.
Enjoy neighbors!
XO,
Jill Gunderson
