The 2023 Lott Impact Trophy Awarded to Michigan’s Junior Colson

By: Bethany Myers

In the world of American football, legends are born not only through exceptional plays on the field but also through impactful contributions off the gridiron. The Lott Impact Organization stands as a testament to this philosophy, recognizing and honoring athletes who demonstrate excellence in both their athletic prowess and their commitment to community service. At the heart of this prestigious recognition is the coveted Lott IMPACT Trophy, an accolade that goes beyond statistics and highlights the character and integrity of the player. Established in 2004 by the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, the award celebrates athletes who significantly impact their teams on and off the field, unlike many other football awards focusing solely on statistics.

Named in honor of Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, the Lott IMPACT award has become synonymous with recognizing the defensive college football player who has made the biggest IMPACT® on his team. IMPACT® stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community, and Tenacity.

Selection Criteria:

What sets the Lott IMPACT Trophy apart is its comprehensive selection criteria. While outstanding performance on the field is a crucial factor, the selection committee, comprising former coaches, players, and media personalities, also evaluates the nominee's character, sportsmanship, and community engagement. This holistic approach ensures that the recipient embodies the values of the award and serves as a role model for aspiring athletes.

Impact Off the Field:

One of the unique aspects of the Lott Impact Organization is its emphasis on community service. The organization believes in recognizing athletes who understand the importance of giving back and making a positive impact beyond the football field. Many past winners of the Lott IMPACT Trophy have been actively involved in charitable endeavors, using their platform to inspire change and contribute to the betterment of society.

The Impact of Ronnie Lott:

Ronnie Lott, a four-time Super Bowl champion and eight-time Pro Bowler, is more than just a football icon. His commitment to excellence and sportsmanship serves as the foundation for the Lott Impact Organization. Lott's legacy extends beyond his illustrious playing career as he continues to inspire the next generation of athletes to strive for greatness on and off the field.

2023 Trophy Winner, Junior Colson

In December 2023, Michigan’s Junior Colson was named the winner of the 20th Annual Lott IMPACT® Trophy at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach at the Lott IMPACT® Trophy Annual Award Show from Ronnie Lott. Colson led the Wolverines with 71 tackles, 26 more than the next closest player, to go with a pair of tackles for a loss and as many quarterback hurries.

Colson, the defensive leader of the nation’s best defense, led the Wolverines to a perfect regular season and the number one seed in the College Football Playoff. Michigan faced Alabama in the 2024 Rose Bowl in what turned out to be an exciting nail-biter - Michigan 27, Alabam 20. Michigan headed to Houston for the College Football National Championship on January 8th and pulled off an impressive win against the Washington Huskies. A perfect ending to Colson’s season!

Colson is the third Lott IMPACT® Trophy winner from Michigan, joining Jabril Peppers (2016) and Aidan Hutchinson (2021). In 2021, Charles Woodson was also presented with an honorary Lott IMPACT® Trophy.

The keynote address came from college football Hall of Famer Brent Jones, a three-time Super Bowl champion and four-time All-Pro tight end. Joel Klatt from Fox Sports was the emcee. Joe Stapleton, Newport Beach Mayor Pro-Tem, is a member of the Lott IMPACT Trophy board of directors, which is led by Angels Baseball Chairman Dennis Kuhl.

The Pacific Club IMPACT® Foundation will present a $25,000 check to the general scholarship fund at Michigan to recognize Colson’s achievement. Runners-up were Jonah Elliss from Utah, Laiatu Latu of UCLA, and Alabama’s Dallas Turner. Each of those schools will receive $5,000 for their school’s scholarship fund.

The Lott Impact Organization and its coveted trophy symbolize a commitment to excellence beyond the confines of the football field. By recognizing athletes for their character, leadership, and community service, the organization not only celebrates the achievements of outstanding players but also encourages a culture of responsibility and positive influence in the world of sports. As the Lott IMPACT Trophy continues to shine a spotlight on the best and brightest in college football, it serves as a beacon for athletes aspiring to make a lasting impact in all aspects of their lives
