Yogasix newport beach

By: Amanda Huntsman

A new yoga studio called YogaSix opened its doors in the Eastbluff neighborhood in June 2022, owned and operated by fitness enthusiasts Yianni and Georgia Alvertos.

As a family, fitness has always been essential to the Alvertos’. Yianni earned his fitness certificate from UCLA, and Georgia coached a girl's basketball league for years. Their two kids (Alex & Olga) both played high school basketball and ran track, and Alex went on to play at the collegiate level. During Covid, Yianni and Georgia decided it was time to start investing in something they love that impacts people positively. They discovered Yogasix, fitness for the mind and body, and immediately knew it was the right fit.

The couple sought out a location in Newport Beach and found the ideal location between Ralphs and Mutts in Eastbluff. They signed the lease and began making necessary modifications before opening their doors last June.

Their community-driven studio provides a place of peace for people to come together, breathe, and leave feeling rejuvenated. "Everyone deserves the mind-body experience of yoga," explains Georgia. YogaSix teaches in a way that is easy for everyone to follow and understand, which allows everyone to participate, regardless of age or experience. Each yoga class offered has a specific focus and produces specific body benefits. They offer six different class types (hence the name YogaSix), from hot and powerful to slow and mindful.

Yianni and Georgia are proud that the studio is family-owned; you will often see them in the studio and Olga (their daughter) and Christina (Georgia’s sister) working as wellness advisors. They view their members and staff as part of their extended family. The entire team strives to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable because they believe in a world of inclusion and acceptance of each other. They strive to get to know each member. Everyone has a story; they try very hard to know it. They also focus on creating an environment of well-being that people want to be a part of.

As a community-first business, connection is key. Covid reminded people just how destructive isolation can be. To the YogaSix team, it is essential to bridge the gap connecting one another through community. In doing so, they believe it makes us stronger. They aim to enhance our Newport Beach community and provide a place where people love coming.

Yianni and Georgia believe it is also important to be physically and, most importantly, mentally fit. They personally started looking for new ways of working out as they began to age, and yoga was the best fit. It is something you can do in your 20s as well as your 70s and beyond.

“We are grateful to this community for welcoming us. We want to make our studio a place where all feel welcome and comfortable. We are a Greek-American family that believes that family and community come first. We look forward to forming lasting friendships!

About the Alvertos Family:

Georgia is Greek-American and grew up in Huntington Beach. She received her bachelor’s degree in finance from California State University, Long Beach. She worked as a stockbroker straight out of college for about 15 years and now works for real estate developers. Yianni grew up in Athens, Greece, completed his undergraduate degree in London and received his master's degree from the University of Southern California. He also has an MBA from the University of California, Irvine. Yianni currently works in the mergers and acquisitions department specializing in cyber security. Alex graduated from Chapman University with a data analytics and entrepreneurship degree in 2020. He currently works and lives in Santa Monica. Olga is a Chapman senior majoring in political science and business administration.

In 1994, Yianni and Georgia bought their first home together in Fountain Valley. Twelve years and two kids later, they opted to move to Athens, Greece, for three years. Yianni was born and raised in Greece and always wanted to go back to work/ live there for a few years, affording their children the experience of life abroad. They returned to California in 2009 and have lived in Huntington Beach ever since.

Life Outside of Work:

The Alvertos family loves to travel. They have always prioritized it, and they believe it is why they remain so close. They are constantly exploring new restaurants and expanding their circle of friends. Both of their children are artistic, and they created all of the artwork in their home. Alex started his own company in college, hand-making retro skateboards (Omega Custom Shop), and Olga continues to paint.

They are active members of their Greek community, volunteering at the Long Beach Greek Orthodox Church. Georgia coached the girl's basketball team for seven years and was on the board of the Greek Orthodox basketball league for two years. In addition, Yianni serves as a mentor for UCI business school and Ernst and Young Mentoring Program.
