Worth the Drive: Escape to The Mesa Bungalows in Palm Springs

An Iconic Hollywood Hideaway Reimagined for the Modern Traveler

Nestled in the exclusive celebrity enclave of The Mesa in Palm Springs, The Mesa Bungalows is no ordinary vacation rental. Built in 1937 and meticulously reimagined in 2022, this gated estate combines the charm of old Hollywood with modern luxuries. Inspired by the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel and Jayne Mansfield’s infamous Pink Palace, the property’s glamorous past includes being home to filmmaker Josh Evans (son of Ali McGraw and stepson of Steve McQueen) and Formula One world champion Jensen Button. Rich with history and a fresh new vibe, The Mesa Bungalows is the ultimate desert retreat for those craving a luxurious escape just a short drive from Newport Beach.

Falling in Love with the Desert

For Jon and Kristen Collins, the proud owners of The Mesa Bungalows, Palm Springs has always held a special place in their hearts. After attending Arizona State University, we fell in love with the desert and its unique majestic beauty,” Kristen explains. Living in Newport Beach, they often traveled to Palm Springs, savoring the sunshine, serenity, and stylish charm the city offers. So, when they came across this one-of-a-kind property on Zillow, it felt like destiny. “We had always dreamed of owning a second home in the desert, and when this property popped up, I knew it was meant to be,” she adds. The Mesa Bungalows, with its seamless blend of history, elegance and modern comforts, encapsulates everything they love about Palm Springs.

A Desert Dream Come True

What makes The Mesa Bungalows so special? Let’s start with the expansive grounds. Sitting on a double lot, the estate’s outdoor space is designed to delight every guest. Whether you're looking to unwind or entertain, The Mesa Bungalows has you covered. A lush lawn is perfect for a friendly game of cornhole or a peaceful yoga session. The pink-bottom pool—yes, it’s pink—takes center stage, accented with chic lounge chairs, matching pink umbrellas, and a cascading waterfall that creates an enchanting ambiance. And, of course, the breathtaking views of the San Jacinto Mountains make every moment feel magical.

For golf enthusiasts, the property boasts a putting green. Meanwhile, the upper level of the estate offers an inviting outdoor area ideal for al fresco dining and entertaining. The built-in BBQ, spacious dining tables, cozy fireplace, and panoramic views create the perfect backdrop for unforgettable desert evenings. One of the highlights? A custom daybed inspired by Marc Ange’s famed "Le Refuge," which not only serves as a comfortable lounging spot but also as a stunning showpiece for those Instagram-worthy moments.

Fun Facts & Fabulous Features

It’s not just the amenities that make The Mesa Bungalows a standout—this estate is also making waves in the fashion world. In September, the property served as the shoot location for the holiday campaign of global fashion brand Beach Riot. What made this collaboration even more special? Beach Riot’s founder and owner, Nicole Hanriot Tinkess, is a fellow Newport Beach local!

The Collins Family & Their Newport Beach Life

The Collins family, Jon and Kristen, reside in Newport Beach with their two children Goldie (6) and Fitz (5). The couple met while attending Arizona State University—Kristen as the Feature Baton Twirler and Jon, a foreign exchange student from Australia, playing rugby. Following graduation, they moved to Costa Mesa, where they lived for six years before settling in Newport Heights three and a half years ago. “We love everything about Newport Beach—its easy living, riding our bikes to the beach, walking to C’est Si Bon, and being part of such a friendly community that supports local businesses,” Kristen shares. “Newport is forever home now, and we’re thrilled to raise our kids here.”
