A Blooming Passion: Whitney Baderian’s Cactus & Fern
By: Amanda Huntsman
Whitney Baderian founder of Cactus & Fern
When Whitney Baderian founded Cactus & Fern, she brought with her a lifelong love of gardening, a deep appreciation for nature and a commitment to creating meaningful connections between people and their outdoor spaces. With a mission to simplify the often overwhelming process of home improvement, Whitney has transformed countless properties into stunning extensions of the home, blending timeless design with the therapeutic beauty of nature.
From Childhood Roots to Thriving Business
Gardening has always been part of Whitney's story. Growing up with parents and grandparents who loved to garden, she spent weekends learning the craft and cultivating her passion. After a career in education and time spent as a stay-at-home mom, Whitney rediscovered her creative spark, transitioning into interior design. By 2020, her focus shifted fully to softscape, outdoor living and plant design, and Cactus & Fern was born. “I wanted to help others bring their green dreams to life, designing spaces that not only look beautiful but also encourage relaxation and a deeper connection with nature," Whitney shares.
A Personal Approach to Design
Cactus & Fern is known for its deeply personal and client-centered approach. Whitney and her team emphasize honest communication, efficient timelines and a smooth design experience. “We want our clients to feel that their home is as important to us as it is to them,” Whitney explains. Even after a project is complete, she remains available to offer guidance and support, ensuring the garden continues to flourish and bring joy to her clients year-round.
Highlights and Achievements
Cactus & Fern’s work has been recognized in notable publications, including Latitude 33 for native gardening and drought-tolerant designs and The Architect’s Newspaper for its blend of midcentury and contemporary aesthetics. In 2023, Whitney’s projects were prominently featured in the Newport Harbor Home Tour, showcasing her skill in both landscape and interior plant design.
Exciting Projects on the Horizon
Cactus & Fern is currently immersed in several exciting projects, including:
A beach house in Laguna perched right on the water.
A sprawling property in Coto de Caza, where the front yard has already been completed and the back yard is next.
A stunning Dover Shores property in Newport Beach.
Whitney’s ability to adapt to diverse landscapes and client visions ensures that each project is a harmonious reflection of both the homeowner and the natural environment.
Cactus & Fern isn’t just about creating beautiful spaces; it’s about creating relationships. Whitney’s clients experience a partnership that goes beyond the scope of a project. With her expertise and passion, she continues to make Orange County even more beautiful, one garden at a time.
Connection to Community
Having lived in Orange County for 25 years, Whitney cherishes the community, the incredible schools, and the breathtaking ocean views. “Being by the beach is such a blessing,” she says. “I love that my children will have the memories of growing up in a seaside community.”
When Whitney isn’t designing beautiful outdoor spaces, she’s often working in her own garden, finding the process both creative and therapeutic. She also enjoys traveling with her family, exploring new adventures, and drawing inspiration from her involvement in the Decorative Arts Society.
Giving Back
Whitney has a long history of community involvement, having served for eight years on her local school’s foundation in various leadership roles. She also helps her son run a Lions Heart chapter, a nonprofit organization empowering teens to volunteer in their communities.
