By: Kym Whitney
Savor 2024 delivered an unforgettable, Napa-inspired evening at the Newport Beach Country Club, welcoming over 200 guests to support The Literacy Project. The event, hosted under the stars, was celebrated as a "night to remember" with Newport Beach Mayor Pro Tem Joe Stapleton and emcee Bart Zandbergen.
Five prominent community figures were honored for their contributions, including Barclay Butera of Barclay Butera Interiors, Cindy Culpepper of Galardi Group/Wienerschnitzel and Glenn Stearns of Kind Lending. Anne and John Wortmann from Balboa Bay Resort also received recognition. California State Senator Bob Archuleta delivered a powerful testimony, sharing his own struggles with literacy and how organizations like The Literacy Project can change lives.
Amy Cardiff received the prestigious Dream Maker of the Year Award, while the event’s co-chairs, Sue Grant (Founder of The Literacy Project) and Gina Jaha, expressed gratitude for Title Sponsors Daniel Hales and the One Root Foundation/Pyle Family. Attendees enjoyed a luxury car and art gallery experience, courtesy of European Collectibles and Ethos Arts Inc., adding a unique touch to the evening.
Savor 2024 raised significant funds to support The Literacy Project’s mission of empowering struggling readers. Now in its 15th year, The Literacy Project continues to provide critical reading programs to underserved students, helping to break the cycle of illiteracy. The organization’s 30-hour program significantly improves children’s reading abilities, with average skill improvements ranging from 76% to 129%. Additionally, The Literacy Project has donated $1.96 million worth of reading games to 49,014 family members, promoting literacy within families. To date, the nonprofit has served over 11,000 students and secured $5.1 million in funding, providing a brighter future for children across six states.
