Ospi Restaurant: Southern Italy Meets Coastal California

By: Kym Whitney

Opened in December 2024, Ospi restaurant in Costa Mesa blends modern Italian, classic Italian, and California coastal cuisine. Season 19 Top Chef alum, Chef Jackson Kalb has created a dining experience that takes Italian comfort food to new heights. From their house-made pastas and pizzas to the extensive wine list and craft cocktails, they bring the best of Southern Italy to our community. Think of Ospi as a casual lunch trattoria, a familial dinner party restaurant, or a fun recovery brunch spot on the weekend!

Ospi is not just a restaurant but a true celebration of food, hospitality, and community.

The Vision Behind Ospi

Ospi is deeply rooted in husband-and-wife-duo Jackson & Melissa Kalbs’ love for Italian cuisine and their commitment to creating a welcoming, familial atmosphere. The name "Ospi" is derived from ospitante, which means “host” in Italian, reflecting the Kalbs’ dedication to providing a warm, inviting experience for every guest. Their vision was to create a modern yet classic Italian restaurant where guests could feel at home.

This vision of combining casual elegance with culinary artistry is at the heart of Ospi, which serves as a tribute to the classic Brooklyn red sauce joint, blending the timeless charm of Italian-American comfort food with a more refined and contemporary touch. Whether it's a spontaneous weekday meal or a special occasion, Ospi feels like an invitation to a dinner party—one where everyone is welcome, and the food is always the star.

A Menu Rooted in Italian Tradition with a California Twist

The menu at Ospi features a delightful mix of traditional Italian dishes and fresh, locally-sourced ingredients that reflect California’s vibrant food culture. From seafood dishes that highlight the best of coastal California to classic pastas with innovative twists, Ospi offers something for everyone. Signature dishes include the Chicken Parm, Tonnarelli, and Spicy Rigatoni. Ospi is also known for its seafood dishes. The Branzino alla Singapore is lightly fried, with sweet & spicy lacquer and herbs. It’s an unexpected combination of flavors that come together perfectly! The Crispy Sole Milanese, another favorite, is lightly breaded and fried, with arugula, pomodorini, grana padano, and piccata remoulade.

Ospi’s menu also brings creativity to their Neapolitan-style Pizza selection. The Copione has soppressata, honey and chili; the perfect combination of sweet and savory. The Hapa consists of pepperoni, roasted pineapple, jalapeño and Fresno chiles. And, the classic Margherita is available as well. Each bite offers a perfect balance of flavors, making Ospi’s pizzas a true standout.

In addition to the delicious food, Ospi’s cocktail program is another highlight. Along with a nice selection of wines, guests can enjoy a variety of handcrafted drinks designed to complement the flavors of the menu. The Memento Mori Martini is the restaurant’s signature drink which can be made with gin or vodka, dry, dirty, or filthy, with olives or twist, and is shaken tableside. The Chef’s Negroni is another cocktail highlight made with madre mezcal, lo-fi gentian amaro, cappelletti, and a lime twist. For those that prefer a mocktail, Ospi has options that are sure to please.

The Vibe

Ospi’s design is as inviting as its food. The restaurant's modern, airy interior, with its warm wooden accents and clean lines, creates an environment that feels both contemporary and comfortable. There’s an open kitchen where diners can watch the culinary team in action, adding to the dynamic energy of the space. Whether seated inside or on the charming outdoor patio, guests are treated to an ambiance that is both upscale and laid-back—perfect for a wide range of occasions.

The sense of community is an essential part of the Ospi experience. The restaurant has been designed as a gathering place for friends, families, and neighbors, and the Kalbs’ commitment to hospitality shines through in every interaction. Every meal is not just a chance to enjoy delicious food, but also an opportunity to be part of something bigger—an inclusive dining experience that reflects the Kalbs’ core belief in the power of connection through food.

With its modern take on Italian classics, focus on fresh ingredients, and commitment to providing a welcoming dining experience, Ospi is already making a mark on Costa Mesa’s vibrant food scene. Whether you’re in the mood for an indulgent dinner, a casual bite with friends, or a weekend brunch, Ospi offers a dining experience that celebrates the best of Italy, California and community.
