Yachts of Fun: Navigating the High Seas of Yacht Charters

By: Lisa Jonsson

A private yacht charter offers an unparalleled vacation experience, blending luxury with the freedom to chart your own course. A private yacht charter isn't just for seasoned sailors or the ultra-wealthy. It's an extraordinary experience that can be tailored to families or adults looking for an unforgettable getaway. On a yacht, the possibilities are endless. Dive into crystal-clear waters for snorkeling and scuba diving, feel the thrill of jet-skiing, try your hand at fishing, or simply relax under the sun as you drift along serene coastlines. Exploring a destination by yacht provides a unique perspective and access. There are many different things to consider when embarking on a yacht charter. This short guide will give you some tips to begin your journey.

When and Where

You can charter a yacht virtually anywhere there is water. Selecting the right destination depends on your travel dates and preferences. The Caribbean is ideal for winter and spring, but it's best to avoid during hurricane season (May 1 to November 1). The Mediterranean is stunning in the summer, while Mexico offers a closer, year-round option. As a travel designer, I can help you find the perfect spot, considering both seasonal weather and your travel dreams.

Size Matters: Selecting the Yacht

Yachts can be chartered in a variety of types and sizes: monohulls, catamarans or motor yachts.  Each has its pros and cons. Many sailors may consider what I’m about to say controversial:  I prefer catamarans, especially for group trips as they tend to have a little more deck space and don’t heel as much (that’s lean over while under sail). Often, your budget will guide your choice of yachts. Tip: When considering various yachts, pay attention to the age of the boat. Older boats are cheaper than newer boats, but are more likely to have issues. Budget permitting, look for a boat less than 5 years old.

 Budget and Costs

Establishing a budget is crucial when chartering a yacht. Costs vary tremendously based on location, time of year, size and age of the boat. Yachting can become surprisingly affordable when you split the cost among a group. For example, a luxury 40-foot catamaran for six adults can cost as little as $7,500 per week, while larger motor yachts for up to 24 guests can run up to $130,000 per week. It's important to have a clear understanding of all costs involved and any potential extra charges, such as docking fees, crew gratuity, fuel expenses and cruising permits. Work closely with your travel advisor to ensure transparency and to find a yacht that fits your budget without compromising on quality.

To Crew or Not to Crew

Yachts can be chartered as all-inclusive experiences (for the ultimate luxury experience), “bareboat” - without any crew or supplies, or virtually anything in between. Crews can include skippers, chefs and childcare. If you don’t have any sailing experience, consider a cruise n’ learn vacation. If you have sailing experience, you can charter a yacht without a skipper or crew. Tip: If you bareboat your yacht, take advantage of the provisioning services that will stock the boat before your arrival with groceries, drinks and supplies of your choosing. If you have some sailing experience, but not sure you are totally ready to chart a course solo in a new destination, a flotilla is great option. You can enjoy the freedom of captaining your own vessel accompanied by a lead boat with a knowledgeable flotilla crew familiar with the local area. Flotillas offer set sailing routes, organized anchorages each night and optional social events.
