let’s ask katie machoskie - december 2024

Dear Katie,

We are putting our house on the market on December 1st. Some people have told us not to put any holiday decor out because it will distract buyers.  That doesn’t sound very festive. What are your thoughts?

 Happy Holidays Sally!

Skip holiday decor? I say Bah Humbug! Staging a house for sale during the holidays presents a unique opportunity to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that appeals to potential buyers. Here are some tips to make your home shine without overwhelming it with holiday decor:

  1. Keep it Simple: Less is more when it comes to holiday decorations. Opt for a neutral color palette that compliments your home’s existing decor. Subtle touches like a simple wreath on the door or a bowl of pinecones can add a festive feel without overpowering the space.

  2. Highlight Key Features: Use decorations to draw attention to your home’s best features. A garland can accentuate a beautiful staircase, while a tastefully decorated mantle can highlight a fireplace.

  3. Avoid Personalization: Keep decorations neutral and avoid overly personalized items like family photos or personalized stockings. This helps potential buyers envision themselves in the space.

  4. Emphasize Light: As daylight hours are shorter, ensure your home is well-lit. Use candles or string lights to create a cozy ambiance.

  5. Skip the Clutter: Avoid large, space-consuming decorations. Maintain open spaces to make the home feel larger and more welcoming.

By thoughtfully balancing festive decor with a clean, inviting presentation, you can make your home appealing to buyers even during the holiday season.
