For the Love of Hot Dogs: Dean & Maria Lindsay’s 34-Year Legacy at Fashion Island

A Family Tradition for Newport Beach

For more than 20 years, taking my children to Fashion Island has been a cherished family tradition. The highlight of every visit was stopping by the hot dog stand run by Dean and Maria Lindsay. There’s something timeless about grabbing a perfectly cooked hot dog, finding a cozy spot by the fountains and watching my kids devour theirs with big smiles. Little did I know, that this beloved cart has a story rooted in resilience, innovation and the kind of community spirit that’s rare to find these days.

From Excavation to Hot Dogs

Dean’s journey to the food business started in a much different world. “I had a grading and excavation business,” he explained. “But during the recession of 1990-91, after Operation Desert Storm, work dried up completely. I was also a licensed landscape contractor, but there weren’t any prospects in sight.”

That’s when a chance opportunity came along. Fashion Island was looking for a hot dog vendor. Dean and Maria applied, crafting a unique presentation menu that included veggie dogs. “The program manager was a vegetarian,” Dean shared. “That little addition set us apart and landed us the spot. We’ve been here ever since—34 years and counting!”

Food Inspired by Family

Although the hot dog business was new, food was always a big part of Maria’s family. “Maria’s Italian grandmother was an incredible cook,” Dean said. “Her recipes inspired the Italian food stand her family ran at state fairs, and that love of food shaped what we do today. In fact, our Italian Dog, one of our most popular menu items, is a tribute to Maria’s roots.”

Loyal Customers and Unforgettable Moments

Over the years, the Lindsays’ hot dog stand has become much more than a place to grab a snack—it’s a gathering spot for loyal customers and a backdrop for countless memories.

“We had one customer who used to bring his dog to the cart,” Dean reminisced. “The dog would sing opera, and people would gather around to watch. It was so funny and always drew a crowd.”

Another story highlights the deep connections they’ve built with their customers. “There was a World War II veteran who drove up from San Diego every Wednesday,” Dean shared. “While his wife shopped, he’d come to the cart for a hot dog and a chat. He did this for years. Sadly, he and his wife have since passed, but we’ll never forget them. It’s moments like those that make this job so meaningful.”

A Menu for Everyone

The Lindsays have always strived to offer something for everyone. Whether it’s a classic hot dog or one of their unique creations like the Italian Dog, customers can count on high-quality food and exceptional care. “People know they’ll always get something special here,” Dean said.

Changes at Fashion Island

Fashion Island has evolved dramatically over the past three decades. “We’re one of the last mom-and-pop shops here,” Dean said. “Most of the small, family-run businesses are gone now. We feel like we represent a bygone era, and we’re proud of that.”

Something You Might Not Know

Even after 34 years, Dean still has some surprises up his sleeve. “People call me the Hot Dog Man,” he said with a smile. “But what they don’t know is I’m actually a cat man. I love my two cats, Momo and Dottie—they’re my little buddies.”

A Legacy of Love and Community

For Dean and Maria, their hot dog stand is about much more than food. “This has been our livelihood, but it’s also been our way of connecting with people,” Dean said. “The stories, the relationships, and the memories we’ve built over the years are what really matter.”

So next time you’re at Fashion Island, and you see Dean and Maria’s stand. Stop by, grab a hot dog, and take a moment to chat with the Lindsays. You’ll be part of a story that’s been 34 years in the making—and still going strong.
