Empowering Girls and Celebrating Women's Legacies: The Women's Journey Foundation

By: Jessica Susolik

The Women's Journey Foundation (WJF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening confidence and self-reliance in women and girls of all ages. Founded in 2007, WJF has made significant strides in addressing the alarming issue of low self-esteem among girls, with over 90% of participants reporting increased confidence and happiness after participating in their programs.

At the heart of WJF's mission is the Girls I CAN Program, which empowers young girls aged 10-18 through interactive workshops focused on self-discovery, creative expression, and coping and communication skills. The program addresses crucial topics such as peer pressure, insecurities, and the negative effects of social media, providing a safe space for girls to explore their talents and strengths.

"When girls discover their potential and strength, they are less apt to make poor life decisions," says Patty Turrell, Founder of the Women's Journey Foundation.

In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, WJF pivoted to offer online programming, reaching girls in 24 states by 2021. Recognizing the diverse needs of different age groups, the organization also developed the Youth Ambassador Council, a mentorship program that pairs young girls with accomplished women in their desired career fields, fostering leadership skills and personal growth.

Beyond empowering girls, WJF celebrates the remarkable journeys and achievements of women throughout history through its "Making HERstory" program. This powerful performance spotlights the stories of historic women who paved the way for generations, inspiring present and future generations with their resilience and contributions across various fields.

Looking ahead, WJF has ambitious plans to launch a podcast created for girls by girls, as well as an interactive Women's HERstory legacy aimed at preserving and promoting the power of influential women throughout history.

"When girls discover their historical lineage, they begin to understand that no matter their backgrounds or circumstances, they possess the strength and capability to achieve their dreams," Turrell says.

With a strong commitment to empowering girls and celebrating women's journeys, the Women's Journey Foundation continues to make a lasting impact on individuals and communities alike.
