The Biggest Acne Breakthrough in Years

By: Dr. Jennifer Armstrong

Looking in the mirror only to notice a big red, inflamed pimple or worse, a face full of pimples, can be enough to send you into hiding. The emotional toll can be overwhelming for those who suffer from acne and feel like they've tried everything on the market to no avail.

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting upward of 50 million Americans annually. When prescription medications and in-office treatments do not work for a patient, dermatologists resort to prescribing Accutane, which comes with the risk of severe side effects.

Fortunately, there is a new breakthrough acne treatment available called AviClear. It is an FDA-cleared energy device for treating mild to severe acne that will change how we treat acne in the medical community. AviClear targets the sebaceous glands by shrinking them, so there is less oil production, and fewer blocked pores. AviClear is the only treatment on the market today that addresses sebum production.

The standard protocol requires three 30-minute sessions once a month and can be used safely on all skin types and tones. It also works on blackheads and whiteheads. After the treatment, pimples may be slightly red, lasting only a few minutes. AviClear can be used to treat acne on the face and body.

Clinical data shows a dramatic improvement at three months and even more so six months after the last treatment in the series of three. In the clinical study, 80 percent of patients saw at least half of their acne clear after three treatments, and their results improved even more after six months. Also, post-treatment breakouts were reported to be shorter, less severe, and infrequent.

AviClear is the first treatment to come along in decades that is as effective in treating mild to severe acne as Accutane. Until now, Accutane has been the go-to option when other treatments are ineffective, but it carries risks such as depression, birth defects, liver inflammation, joint pain, and vision problems.

I am excited to be one of the first doctors in the country to carry AviClear and to finally have an option for treating acne that does not involve prescribing drugs.
