Coastally Quiet Luxury Speaks Volumes

By: Sabrina Azadi

The term “quiet luxury” defines a paired down, minimalist sense of style often with muted tones and simple silhouettes—the antithesis to the “more is more” colorful and daringly bold fashion point of view.

We’ve decided to offer some tips on how to navigate this quiet luxury trend that’s taking the fashion world by storm. We’re keeping in mind that it works best when tweaked to fit our lifestyle and our particular Newport Coast aesthetic—a distinctly chic yet relaxed point of view. We recommend our coastal version to be taken with a pinch of salt and mixed with what you already own, since there’s no need to reinvent the fashion wheel.

Quiet luxury items are not ones you’re instantly going to be drawn to; yet ultimately that’s exactly their appeal. There’s a sense of longevity and a certain confidence one exudes when one wears something well thought out and intentional. The fit and cut take precedence when you take away all the bells and whistles.

We’ve hand-picked some of our favorite must-have coastally quiet luxury items that can be easily re-worn and re-imagined. Although they might not have you gushing at first glance (like that pink sequin dress that you bought and have worn once) they do have the staying power of classics, are great fall pieces and allow you (rather than your clothes) to shine.

Classic Cashmere
If quiet luxury could speak, it would whisper “cashmere” as a symbol of everything it represents—and a cashmere sweater is the epitome of the quiet luxury fall must-have item. Not only does cashmere feel extraordinarily soft on the skin, it’s also 10 times warmer than wool. Although in Newport Beach we might approach cashmere as an afterthought; and wrap it around our shoulders during the day (and only actually wear it on cool nights) it nevertheless has upper echelon appeal (even with its humble origins—the fibers are found in the underbelly of a goat) and continues to conjure images of soft sophistication.

Logo-Free Handbag
There’s nothing better than investing in a logo-free handbag that can be carried over and over again and year after year. Ditching the big bold logos means you can decide what kind of bag you like carrying and what shape and material works for you. Without the lure of a big logo or a brand name, you get to decide what you love to carry.

Classic Shades
Our coastal version of quiet luxury, wouldn’t be complete without a pair of solid shades that have wide appeal. Our shades are often our first point of contact when looking at someone “eye to eye” and what better way to exude your true self (without the distraction of a logo on your eyewear) than by having the logo on the inside rather than the outside of your shades.

Winter Hats
Felt or wool hats (unlike caps or beanies) exude a certain sophistication that come with the change of weather—and can hide a multitude of bad hair days. Look to nature for colors that work best in fall; with olive and beige tones that are the backbone of the quiet luxury palette.

Loafing Around
No outfit is complete without a pair of shoes that are made for walking. A classic loafer with some variation of brassware or buckle adds just the right amount of shine without any bling. A short block heel or a flat loafer work well with a variety of outfits and brings the whole concept of quiet luxury together when worn in neutral shades of browns, beige and taupe.
