JDRF: Leading the Fight Against Type 1 Diabetes
By: Kym Whitney
JDRF is a prominent non-profit organization with a rich history of dedication to funding research and advocacy efforts to tackle type 1 diabetes (T1D). Established in 1970 by parents of children with T1D, the organization has become a global leader in T1D research, support, and advocacy.
They have provided over $2.5 billion in research funding since their inception, funding projects and clinical trials focused on understanding the causes of T1D, improving treatments, and, ultimately, finding a cure.
Advocacy Efforts
Beyond research, JDRF is a staunch advocate for individuals with T1D. They work tirelessly to champion policies and legislation that support those living with T1D. These efforts include advocating for improved access to healthcare, affordable insulin, and increased research funding from government agencies. Recognizing the challenges faced by individuals and families dealing with T1D, JDRF offers a range of support programs and resources. These include educational materials, support groups, and community events designed to help those affected by the disease navigate its complexities.
Local Impact
The Southern California chapter is a shining example of their commitment to making a difference at the grassroots level. This chapter includes three counties – Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego – and within each community, JDRF plays a crucial role in bringing together individuals, families, and businesses to support their mission.
Community Engagement
In Orange County, JDRF actively engages with the local community through intimate events and activities throughout the year. The Wine & Whiskey Procurement Party, held on January 18th, was hosted by active members Polina Chebotareva and Lacy Nicole. The goal was to raise awareness about T1D and how people can get involved and support the organization. Entry to the event required one exceptional wine or spirit, which will be available in the gala auction.
Annual Gala and Fundraising Efforts
One of the highlights of the chapter's efforts is the annual Orange County One Night Gala. This event is a collective commitment to JDRF's mission. The gala honors individuals and families, this year celebrating the Skjonsby Family, who have significantly contributed to the diabetes community.
Under the leadership of Co-Chairs Jen, Lauren, and Marie Hogan, the 2024 One Night Gala will take place March 9th at the elegant Pendry Newport Beach and will include hosted cocktails, a three-course dinner, a premier silent and live auction, as well as Fund A Cure where all donations go directly to research.
