By: Bethany Myers

In an exciting CIF-SS Division 1 final match, junior attacker Piper Sidebotham's exceptional performance led Corona del Mar's girls' water polo team to a 12-11 victory over JSerra Catholic. With four goals to her name, Sidebotham played a crucial role in securing the team's second Division 1 title in three years and their eighth CIF championship overall.

Amidst the intense competition, Sidebotham stood out with her skill and determination for Corona del Mar High's girls' water polo team. Despite facing formidable opposition from JSerra Catholic, Sidebotham's standout performance, including her season-high four goals, helped secure the crucial victory on February 18, 2024.

The victory was not solely down to Sidebotham's efforts; it was a collective achievement fueled by teamwork and resilience. Contributions from other team members, such as Ava Schoening's three goals and Gabby MacAfee's remarkable saves, further solidified the team's success. Despite challenges, including the absence of key player Tia Wells, the Sea Queens demonstrated unity and determination, ultimately clinching the coveted title. Their victory serves as a testament to the power of teamwork and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Looking ahead, Corona del Mar's water polo team is poised for continued success, with a blend of experienced seniors and emerging talent. Their triumph not only secures their place in history but also inspires future generations of athletes to strive for excellence through unity and dedication.

Message from Coach Hunt:

"Our push at the end of the season found us peaking at the best moment. We went 8-2 in our last 10 games.  A goal we set in November was to be playing our best water polo in February.  We played a very tough schedule throughout our season, and I believe that prompted faster growth, and gave us great preparation to take the Division 1 championship. We had many great individual efforts from several players throughout the season, including a four goal CIF Finals performance from Piper Sidebotham. Our strongest component however was our ability to be together, to get better together, and to build a strong team, together." "Our organization as a whole came together with enormous support. The CDMHS athletic administration along with our CDM Boosters and parents collectively added the pieces that the team needed to achieve success. There is a lot of work behind the scenes that can oftentimes go unaccounted for."
